Job Description

Summary

The GARP Sr. Res. Ass. assists in the operation of the laboratory by performing specialized tasks involving genomic profiling technologies including Next-Generation Sequencing. The position is responsible for the operation of various instruments and processing samples for users of the GARP Core. He/she must develop and document research techniques that support specific custom projects submitted to the Core. The Sr. Res. Ass. will be expected to stay abreast of the latest advancements in the sequencing field by conducting literature searches. He/she is expected to train less experienced technicians.

Job Duties

• Perform specialized tasks involving genomic profiling technologies.
  • Execute complex workflows for NGS library preps.
  • Operate and maintain NGS sequencers.
• Develop and maintain lab protocols and actively participate in improving protocols.
  • Establish protocols for custom projects and improve existing protocol towards generating higher-quality data.
• Work synergistically with peers from your own and other groups.
  • Work with tech support teams from various companies to optimize and troubleshoot protocols.
  • Train co-workers in the proper use of instrumentation, protocols, and software.
  • Be able to efficiently train less experienced or new staff to perform complex workflows and to operate high-end NGS instrumentation.
• Organize and prioritize work to ensure on-time delivery of results.
  • Takes leadership in monitoring turnaround of project completion.
• Interpret results for validity and scientific meaning.
  • Develops the competence to validate and quality-check results generated by the Core.
• Present scientific results clearly in written and oral format
  • Shows competence to present and interpret results in lab meetings.
  • Generates SOPs clearly and in standardized format.
• Keep pace with the Core's technologies
  • Takes the initiative to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving technologies that are housed in the Core.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. 
• Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in a related field.
