Position Summary

The Research Assistant position is responsible for designing and conducting research as assigned, and is available in Dr. Doug Chalker's group to carry out research aimed at understanding how cells maintain structural organization. The lab studies are primarily conducted using a non-pathogenic, ciliated protozoan called Tetrahymena. Current research focuses on elucidating the role of signaling pathways that control cellular polarity. The research involves performing genetic manipulation of Tetrahymena cells and using such engineered Tetrahymena strains to generate data that test specific hypotheses. Experience in basic molecular biology techniques is highly preferred. Previous experience working with Tetrahymena or other model research organisms is desired.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Independently plan, design and conduct research studies, experiments, and surveys.
  • Develop procedures for the collection, verification and management of data.
  • Maintain detailed records research with careful documentation in electronic and physical notebooks.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques that are used in specific experiments and assays. A major part of the time involves specimen processing, collection of data, and preparation of solutions, etc., to carry out these experiments. Some set-up and maintenance of equipment is also part of the assigned tasks. 
  • Develop and improve protocols based on previous lab work.
  • Collect data from experiments and perform data analysis.
  • Supervise and train new lab personnel (graduate, undergraduate, staff).
  • Verify correctness of data submitted.
  • Prepare findings and draft interpretive reports/ summaries for publications.
  • May assist in grant preparation and proposals and participate in preparing data for publication or for dissemination on lab websites.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. 

  • The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Salary Range

$17.10 - $29.09 / Hourly
